The Statue of Liberty, 2019
Courtesy Peres Projects“Felix Handschin, on the occasion of my exhibition at his gallery in Basel in 1970, was excited by the Statue Of Liberty painting, which he wanted to make into a poster. After speaking with some friends of the arts in Basel, he decided against printing such a poster and advised me to turn all my energies to writing because in this life, he said, my visual work would never be accepted.
At the Basel Art Fair in 1979, Mike Steiner took a stand exhibiting only my work, and Swiss television chose my pieces, along with those of Jean Tinguely and Joe Jones and one or two Swiss artists, to show to their countrymen. So times, it seems, do change. (Perhaps I should add, though, that my work was televised only from the waist up.)”
